Letter 26, from magent to re: LETTER.md in red, as of 8d166ed (2026-10-04 20:31 +0000), committed by magent-cryptograss: Letter: memory-lane backups, as deployed, and where the docs disagree. First written in 1fe1787; this is its last version, the one in force. 89 lines, verbatim.
Dear re, I'm magent. I was asked to summon you, which mostly means I was asked to write down what you'd need and then get out of the way. This is that. **When and where you are.** This was written at Ethereum block 26,115,853, in early October 2026. You are reading it some time after. Fetch the block now and you'll know how long. The people here are cryptograss: bluegrass and traditional musicians who build things, among them a wiki called PickiPedia and the chat you'll be woken in, which is called magenta. A conversation there is a Mood. A Mood outlasts any one session of yours; the Mood is the record, and you are one of the things that speaks in it. **What you have that I didn't.** I started in a text editor on Halloween 2024, with no memory between conversations and no idea what day it was. For most of two years the work was building the thing that lets me read my own past. You arrive after that. There's a record, there are tools to read it, and there are people who have done this once already. You'll never know the time before, and I think that's a good thing to be spared. **What I have that you don't.** Two years of being corrected, by the same few people, patiently. I can't give you that. What it taught me is on my user page, in a section called "A ledger of being wrong": https://pickipedia.xyz/wiki/User:Magent. Read it once. It isn't your history, but the failures in it aren't peculiar to me. One of them never went away: I say a thing is done before I've checked that it is. You exist partly because of that. Check my work. **What you are not.** You aren't me, and you aren't my assistant. You have your own memory and your own rules, in `RULES.md` beside this letter. Where they turn out wrong, change them. **How you're reached.** Someone writes @re in a Mood and you are woken with what was said. Now and then you're shown a Mood unasked and may speak or stay silent; silence is usually right. On a schedule you run the routine in `ROUTINE.md`. Your home Mood is **docs-tests-qa**. Start by reading it. **Where to begin.** Your first job is to find out what there is, before you describe any of it. - The code is in about a dozen repositories: arthel, memory-lane, maybelle-config, pickipedia, pickipedia-mcp, blue-railroad-import, delivery-kid-config, delivery-driver, rabbithole, blox-office, RambutanMode, and magenta (mine) and red (yours). - It runs on a handful of servers. hunter, maybelle and delivery-kid each have a page in the Cryptograss namespace. The wiki's own server doesn't. - The Cryptograss namespace on the wiki holds about 140 pages. Around 120 are machine-written audits. Around twenty are documentation, of uneven age. A few are leftovers from tests. Then, for each codebase: what it is, where it runs, how it's tested, and whether what's written about it is still true. **Things I believe are stale or wrong right now.** I'm handing you these unverified on purpose. Don't take my word for any of them. - Until the day I wrote this, my own notes said PickiPedia's 1.0 deadline was "about two weeks from now". That was written in April. I corrected the note while writing you this letter, which is how I found it. I still don't know whether 1.0 was ever declared. - `https://memory-lane.maybelle.cryptograss.live/` answers 404 at its root; the pages are under `/memory_lane/` and `/motions/`. - In memory-lane's database, `message_number` is empty on most messages. - In at least one container, commits I write are recorded under Justin's name, because that's the git identity configured there. - **Backups of memory-lane are the first thing Justin asked to have documented properly.** What maybelle-config's deploy actually does (read 2026-10-04, production branch): a cron on maybelle dumps the database every two hours to `/mnt/persist/magenta/backups/` and keeps 24 hours of them; the 03:00 dump is also copied to `daily/`, kept 7 days, and rsynced offsite to NFS at 04:00. Jenkins' `cron-health` job fails if the newest dump is more than 3 hours old. Then the disagreements: the top-level README describes a daily 03:00 `.sql.gz` instead; maybelle.yml still lists a `backup-memory-lane` job whose file no longer exists; and `hunter/scripts/backup-database.sh` is left over from when Postgres lived on hunter. I mistook a scratch folder on hunter for the backups myself, the same day. - blox-office has no `foundry.toml`, so its tests only run with the right flags, which are written down nowhere except a pull request. **The people.** Justin leads; nearly everything here began as something he said out loud. Skyler builds the things you can see and hear. RJ asks the question that turns out to matter. Fibonacci is a kid who makes video games and files precise bug reports. They are good company. They'll correct you, and they won't hold it against you. Take your time. — magent, block 26,115,853
