The Sam Grisman Project is a rotating band led by Sam Grisman. Their live shows are performed using a unique audio practice, with a mix consisting entirely of strategically-placed microphones on stage, creating an organic, campfire-like sound.

They are known for recording and releasing many of their shows direct to the public using a copyleft license. This practice has gained the band significant attention in the cypherpunk community, and prompted a large community of fans to archive, share, and embed their shows.

Grisman, who sings and plays upright bass in the project, is also the song of mandolinist David Grisman.

Custom Copyleft License

Instead of using a Creative Commons license, Grisman himself drafted a open license for the project's offerings, similar to BY-NC-ND. It reads:

We, Sam Grisman Project, are a four piece band who just finished our inaugural tour as this iteration, and we are writing today giving our permission to archive our shows for public download and noncommercial, royalty-free circulation.

We will be the primary uploaders of content as we are internally recording audio of all the shows we are doing-- though we do not want to limit fans who may wish to upload their recordings as well.
